Gratitude and Giving - The Last Bamboo Leaf

Triangles of sticky rice and red beans perfectly wrapped in bamboo leaves make me grateful.

I reluctantly unwrapped the last leaf from the sticky rice yesterday. I say reluctantly because they were so beautiful that I just wanted to gaze at their artistry. The bamboo leaves were pulled taut and smooth with a top knot as a finishing touch. Do you see that knot? How does someone go about pushing a bamboo thread through sticky rice? Unwrapping one of the little treasures was like undraping an obi from a geisha (or so I imagine).

These were a gift from a family in Arcadia. The grandmother prepared them for me to show her gratitude for the persimmons they picked from our yard. I'm grateful for the time, talent and . . . . . gratitude that went into creating them.

Every time I looked at them I was reminded of the circle of gratitude.

Not just beautiful - they tasted pretty darn good too.

This post also appears at Cancer Banter.

Thanks for sharing. That is beautiful! At least it's on your blog now, so you can still look at it whenever you wish. :)

Yes, you're right, Kathy. It gives me the same pleasure to look at the photos.

When I lived in East Los Angeles, grandmothers used to send their kids over to pluck my banana leaves for their tamales. They always wanted to give me money but I wouldn't take it. Kind of wish they had given me a tamale though. I would have enjoyed seeing how it all worked together.

PA, Yea, it would have been cool to see and taste the finished product. These sticky rice bundles are kind of like the Asian equivalent of tamales.

I really love homemade tamales, but once I found out how much work is involved, I've never made them at home. Do you have a source for great tamales?

Wow, what a great way to say thank you. I'd say that one hit all the senses.

After experiencing several "non thank you's", I'm wondering if a thank you is becoming a lost art.

Robert, You're right about these hitting all the senses. They even whisper to me.

Do you think gratitude is becoming a dying art? It is common courtesy to thank someone, but it's also important to not expect gratitude or thanks on the other person's part. It's great when it happens, but can lead to disappointment and resentment when it doesn't.

That's why these were so special - I didn't expect (or want) anything in return.

Not picking on younger people, BUT I hear less gratitude or a simple thank you from them.

I'm like you, when I do something for someone, I expect nothing in return. We were taught common courteous and I have a feeling not everyone was. Bonnie is very much a "thank you, you're welcome" type of person.

Here's a comical story. A friend of mine gave a little boy of 3 years old a small candy bar. The mother asked the young lad, "What do you say?" He looked up at my friend and said, "Will you open it?"

Love the candy bar story!

There is a couple down at the 99 cent store parking lot who sell tamales out of the trunk of their car. A buck a tamale. A little too hot for me but I buy them on occasion. That or Trader Joes

It is a piece of art! And looks yummy, too.

This has got to be the prettiest picture of sticky rice packages that I have ever seen. I can see why you hesitated to devour them. The packaging is especially lovely.

JCK, Yes definitely beautiful AND delish

Carolyn, I did a google image search, and all of the other sticky rice bundles looked a little crude by comparison.
